hey there

Whether you're planning a complete kitchen or bathroom renovation or an upgrade to your existing cabinets, one of the key decisions you'll have to make is whether to go with painted or thermofoil doors. This is one of the biggest questions we get when designing kitchens for our clients.

So how do you know what's best for you?

Both options have their pros and cons, and there are a few things to consider when making your decision.

Painted cabinets are a classic choice that never goes out of style. They offer a sleek, polished look that can be customized to fit any design aesthetic. Whether you're going for a modern, minimalist look or a more traditional, rustic feel, painted cabinets can be customized to fit your vision. And if you ever get tired of the colour, you can easily repaint them to update the look of your kitchen.

Painted cabinets do require some maintenance to keep them looking their best. Over time, the paint can chip or scratch, especially in high-traffic areas. You'll also want to be careful about using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials when cleaning painted cabinets, as this can damage the finish.

Thermofoil can get a bad rap, but it has come a LONG way. It is a vinyl material that is wrapped around MDF (medium-density fibreboard) or another type of engineered wood. The material is heated and vacuum-sealed onto the wood, creating a smooth, durable finish. This type of cabinet door is a popular choice for homeowners who want the look of painted cabinets without the higher price tag.

Thermofoil cabinets are a low-maintenance option that can withstand wear and tear over time. The quality has improved astronomically over the years. They're easy to clean with just soap and water, and you won't have to worry about the finish chipping or fading.

Thermofoil cabinets do have their limitations. They come in a limited range of colours and styles, so if you're looking for something more unique or customized, painted cabinets may be a better option.

While thermofoil is durable, it's not as heat-resistant as painted cabinets. So if you're someone who likes to cook or bake, you may want to be careful about placing thermofoil cabinets close to heat sources such as a cooktop.

It ultimately depends on your budget, design preferences, and lifestyle.

If you're looking for a low-maintenance, budget-friendly option that still looks great, thermofoil may be the way to go. If you're willing to invest more money and time into creating a unique, custom look, painted cabinets may be a better choice.

In terms of budget considerations, it's important to keep in mind that prices can vary depending on the size of your kitchen and the specific materials and finishes you choose.

Generally, painted cabinets will be more expensive than thermofoil, but it's worth getting quotes from a few different contractors to get a better sense of your options.

Whether you choose painted or thermofoil cabinets, upgrading your kitchen is a great way to add value to your home and create a space you'll love spending time in. Just make sure to do your research, consider your budget, and choose the option that best fits your lifestyle and design preferences.
